Osaka music festival?!

I can't believe we are in Osaka already! Half way through our trip and 2 days here before heading off to sub-tropical Okinawa :) I will update about Kyoto soon as it was gorgeous.

We spent today in Osaka, after visiting Osaka Castle yesterday. Georgia and I walked around outside when we heard live music coming from the castle. We followed it to find three tents with local bands performing. All at the same time, next to each other... Interesting! But the bands were actually really good. Including a girl playing her own songs on the piano (I'm guessing they were her own, but she was singing in Japanese so I am not an expert haha).

At the far end of the area a big crowd was growing waiting for one band in particular to play. We joined the crowd and WOW! I was blown away by this band - they were a drumming band who were just amazing. Three guys on massive drums, a guy on bass and a guy on piano. It was just so so good. I have got a video to upload later but I can't get it sorted yet.

They were performing a song and dance, super cute but what are those outfits?! They were the subject of my photo today - very blurry (think I have solved this problem now thought!)

A guilty purchase...

So walking down the streets of Namba in South Osaka we came across a shop called Beams. It looks like an Urban Outfitters so we went in, why not?!

I found this...


A fujifilm instant camera!

I have been looking for one in China for a few months, but with postage and film etc it was working out to be about £100 everything included.

In beams this beauty was ¥7000 - about £50. How could I resist?! So I didn't and now am the proud owner of this gorgeous blue instax camera. Unnecessary? Probably. Fun? Absolutely!

And here are a couple of the photos taken last night on our night out in Osaka (details to follow later!)








No idea who the gurning Japanese guy is. We attracted a lot of stares in the club!

And so to celebrate my new camera, here starts the one-photo-a-day-for-a-year 50 before I am 50 challenge! Who cares if is in the middle of the year!

Tokyo... And onto Kyoto!

Delayed post due to lack of wireless!


I am loving Japan :) the people are just lovely. I would kill my kids for using a word like that but I can't think of a better one to sum them up. Kind, helpful, considerate. Of course I am generalising here, and that's just from our small exposure so far. BUT so far we have had a random lady come up to us in the station when we were looking lost and confused (a common expression for us it seems!), explain to us the way to go and then actually take us there herself. As if that would ever happen in London or Shanghai! Plus amazingly helpful staff at restaurants, subways etc. I love the bows too, much nicer than a handshake!

Tokyo has been good fun - the bright lights were just as garish and fun as I imagined them to be and despite it raining heavily and constantly all day yesterday we got to see a lot. We started the day at Oeko Park, where the big museums and some temples are. There are three main ponds and two of them are covered in giant lily pads. It was very quiet there (it seems to be quiet everywhere - bit of a change from the shouting, hocking and beeping of Shanghai!)

We visited the Nippori Textile Town after that, every Pinterest girl's dream! I am glad Georgia was keen because I am not sure it would have been high on Steph's to-do-in-Tokyo list! (No idea why?!) I had to restrain myself but still walked away with 5m of 4 different types of fabric! 4 new projects lined up!

We moved into our capsule hotel yesterday afternoon. I am so glad we booked to stay there, it is something that springs to mind when people mention Tokyo and it was a great experience! They are actually a lot more spacious than I expected, plus complementary pyjamas (very sexy!). We didn't brave the communal shower/bath but we are going to have to suck it up tonight when we arrive at the ryokan!
We were going to the robot restaurant last nigh, which looked as awesome as it sounds, but it was fully booked until 10 by which point we would have missed the last train home and would have to spend the night down stripper street...! Never mind!

Hello strangers!

Soooo I am pretty sure my last post was about my New Years resolution to keep on blogging...6 months later that has clearly worked out well!

But I am now on my SUMMER HOLIDAYS!! And I am travelling around Japan for just under 2 weeks and then on to Yunnan province in China for 2 weeks, THEN back to Shanghai, to Hong Kong and finally to Cardiff for Kat and Eliot's wedding :D so I thought this would be a good way to record what happens along the way!

Steph, Georgia and I safely arrived in Tokyo this afternoon! We are staying at Oak Hostel in the North of Tokyo which seems fine, complementary Japanese robe as standard! We went straight out to see Senso-Ji Temple, which was impressive. It has survived the earthquake but not WW2 so it was mostly rebuilt quite recently.

We had an amazing traditional dinner at a restaurant called Hana No Mae sat on the floor on the mats. There was a mock sumo ring too, which we enjoyed playing sumos in (especially after our big Japanese meal!)
Georgia and I have decided we will try something new at each meal and we outdid ourselves this evening - we tried Satsuma Age (fish cakes with egg, mushrooms and ginger), octopus tempura, tuna sushi, Japanese tea and also cider. It was all amazing, lots of photos taken but on my camera so they will follow. The tuna sushi was the best bit, though it looks completely different to how I think of as sushi - it was served in a big bowl (with a lot of wasabi!)

A great start to our trip, I can't wait to continue exploring tomorrow!

January fun!

Good evening!

I hope you are all having a good January and recovering from Christmas! Everyone got back into the swing of things straight away here; its been a really good couple of weeks at school and I FINALLY feel a bit more organised! Though I have probably completely jinxed that now!

The first weekend back I went out for my first Shanghai brunch - I can't believe it's taken me 5 months to finally get there! This was a Saturday brunch so it was slightly different, but the champagne was still free flow for 3 1/2 hours...! The rest of the people there weren't taking advantage of that but we were! And as a result...

And that continued on into the evening at various bars around Puxi and then to a Yunan restaurant called Southern Barbarian. We arrived halfway through the food, and were left with mashed potato(?), a tasty aubergine dish and some bugs. Yep, bugs. A choice of crickets, wasps or something else which I can't remember at the moment. However I am sticking with vegetarian January, so I couldn't try the bugs. Shame! After that came salsa dancing. No comment on that needed, haha!

Other highlights so far this month include going to see the Shanghai ballet's performance of Swan Lake. Apologies for the rubbish picture, but it was a lovely thing to see - I haven't seen a ballet before and it was so impressive. It was at the Shanghai Cultural Square in the French Concession which is impressive even by itself.

We wen't for a big breakfast at Glo London today. I have had it recommended by so many people and I wasn't disappointed!

I am actually enjoying the veggie challenge, wasn't even tempted by the sausages (well maybe a little!)

First post of 2013!

Happy New Year!

People are always saying that they think New Years is overrated and an anticlimax. To a certain extent I agree, I think the actual night is usually a bit of a let down (present year excluded; lasagne, champagne and Articulate at Libby and Andrew's will never be a let down!). But I actually really enjoy starting the year fresh, it gives me a chance to think about the previous year, what I have achieved and what I want out of the next year. And it's always good to start new things with a whole year ahead!

What a wicked year 2012 has been! I think my top 5 moments of 2012 are:

- Celebrating Anushi and Akshar's wedding in India
- Completing my first 10k run with Kat
- Being a bridesmaid for Libby
- Moving to China and visiting Beijing/the Great Wall with Charlotte
- Being able to spend Christmas with my family and friends (after a lovely mini holiday in Thailand!)

And it looks like 2013 is shaping up to be a great year too, with lots of travel! Seeing more of China with Kat and parents, visiting Hong Kong, Japan and who knows where else in August! Plus being a bridesmaid for Kat in August!

But I also have some goals for 2013, I have been a bit resolution heavy this year:

- To be better at keeping my blog updated - even if no one reads it I like the idea of having a kind of journal I will be able to look back on in the future
- Complete at least two of my 50 in 50 tasks (veggie for a month and writing a letter/card every week for a year)
- Be better at facetiming/skyping friends
- To join another club/society outside of school
- To enter another challenge which will motivate me to get fit... Another run? Trek? Suggestions needed!
- To read more kids books - now I am teaching year 5 I never know what to recommend them to read! So ideally I want to read a kids book every month.

I know that is a lot of resolutions, but I am going to give it a good shot! Maybe review them in June!

Last of 2012, but a resolution!

Ok, so my blog writing has been shocking recently, apologies for that. I am planning on updating it much more frequently next year, as it really doesn't take too long and I am also able to upload my photos now!

I won't go into detail about the last few months as I am sure I have spoken to most of you about it. But I am really enjoying being at home for Christmas, and can't wait to see all my friends in London over the next few days!

On a side note, I am looking for a new challenge for 2013.... Suggestions welcome!

Shanghai tourists

Charlotte has just left after a fantastic 9 days here in China! It was so great to see her and we had a very busy and touristy time in Shanghai and Beijing.
Here is a little update of what we got up to here in Shanghai :)

On Saturday we wandered around the French Concession, an area developed by the French in the 19th century. It is very pretty - lots of tree lined roads with little shops and cafes. The cocktails at the restaurant below were very well deserved after a few hours of walking!




We then went into Fuxing Park where we enjoyed looking at the fountains and lakes, as well as the spontaneous dancing and maraca playing that seems to be typical in Chinese parks!



This woman really knew how to shake a maraca with style!




We really threw ourselves into the tourist life on Monday and Tuesday after buying tickets for an open top bus tour! I really enjoyed it - it is a great way of seeing the big sights and it helped me get my bearings a bit better. It included entry into the Jin Mao tower and the Jade Budda temple, which were both very interesting.







An added benefit of the bus tour was that it helped us get away from the hoards of people that were in the city for the Golden Week holiday. Everywhere you went you were fighting with hundreds of other people for space on the pavement - unlike anything I have seen here so far!




On the Monday night Charlotte and I treated ourselves to a night on the Bund. We went to a restaurant called New Heights which was very fancy! Fantastic food, wine, views and company! Can't ask for much more!




It was a great way to end our tourist trip around Shanghai...next stop BEIJING!

Cooking!

As you may already know, cooking has not been something I have done much of since I have been here. The temptation and ease of Sherpas and Element Fresh delivery after a long day at work are just too much! But I do enjoy cooking, so I have missed it.

Therefore, when Charlene suggested a Chinese cooking course for her birthday I jumped at the chance!

Chef Mike was our guide for the day, and our first dish was xiaolongbao - the traditional Shanghainese dim sum. They are different to normal dim sum because they have a soup inside them! The pastry (I'm not sure pastry is the right word, batter maybe?) was very easy to make - just wheat flour and water, but it was all very technical with how they are rolled out and shaped. Eventually you should end up with 8 perfectly circular shapes to fill with meat, but ours were a bit more "abstract" (to put it kindly!)

The filling in pork mince, onions, mushrooms and lots of sauces and herbs - vinegar, soy etc. there was also a load of chopped up pork jelly (yum!!). That proved to be the secret to the soup inside the dumpling - as the dumplings are steamed the pork jelly melts and turns into the soup! You have to twist the pastry around the meat filling in a fancy way of folding and pinching, which we managed with varying degrees of success...

We also made pork wontons, which were made from ready made pastry (pah!) they were very easy to make, and the filling seemed pretty similar. They also looked quite impressive with only a small amount of effort.




These ones are boiled for a few minutes and then added to a soup.





Again, tasty! But really hard to eat with chopsticks!

Realistically I probably won't make them again myself - no idea on how to even start to find pork jelly and I don't want to think about what I might get by mistake!! But it was a really fun afternoon and it was great to get cooking again!

People's Square

My aim whilst I am here is to visit a new place each week, and also to not return to the same restaurant twice!

I started this a few weeks ago, and my first destination was People's square and Renmin Park. It is a plaza with a mixture of traditional, colonial and modern buildings and skyscrapers, with a park just to the side of it.

Renmin Park was a lovely surprise, once you are inside you can't really tell that you are in the middle of such a busy city. The only clue is the sight of skyscrapers peeping over the top of the trees.




It is very calm and I enjoyed watching the old men playing cards, surrounded by onlookers.




I then turned the corner and came across the marriage market. As the name suggests, parents are there advertising their children in order to attract a suitable marriage. There were so many people there, I would guess over a thousand! And so many adverts for their children, I only wish I could read what they said.




There were lots of couples talking animatedly, I can only imagine they were discussing how suitable the matching of their daughter and son would be.




It was very interesting, but it did make me think of those sons and daughters who are having their future decided when they aren't even present.

Anyway, Charlotte is here at the moment! We are having a very touristy day with an open top bus tour so I am there will be plenty to talk about!

A long time coming!

Apologies for the long gap between my posts. I recently got a new camera and I am trying to work out a way of easily adding the photos to my blog. However, using an iPad is no use as there is no USB port and using my work laptop is no good either as blogger is blocked and VPNs aren't allowed. (VPNs direct your internet through a private network and therefore avoid the bans on Chinese Internet, otherwise known as "The Great Firewall"!)

The past two weeks have been great! I hope my weekends carry on being as fun as they are now!
Highlights of the past couple of weeks;

- Visiting People's Square and Park - eating street food whilst watching old men playing Chinese checkers. Wandering past hundreds of couples displaying information about their children to entice a potential husband or wife for them. Photos to follow!
- Chilled out BBQ in Yanlord
- Trying loads of different types of dim sum (I do have photos of this, as I had to take them on my phone)

- Irish music in a tiny bar called the Wooden Box, followed by dancing in a shockingly bad club!
- Residential trip with year 5 to Nanbei Hu. The kids had a great time on the leap of faith and we all had fun kayaking. The nickname "miss bum in the lake" is likely to stick for the time being! It was nice being outside and getting to know the kids a bit more, as well as the other teachers! Nothing like bonding over cockroaches in your bathroom and toilet incidents on the coach!!
- Ladies day at Aussie Rules - free champagne, great food and fit men in shorts. No complaints from me!

So there is a short and sweet round up of my last few weeks! I will try and add some more posts in more detail in the coming weeks!

Faking it!

Yesterday was a day of fakes! First stop... Food republic. This is found in the basement of a big supermarket called Carrefour and it is the equivalent of a food court. Lots of different Chinese, Korean and Japanese food. BUT the menus are all in mandarin. A problem? Oh no!




This food is all plastic! So any meal you want to buy, you can just point at one that looks quite nice and a similar bowl is produced for you! Perfect for someone who hasn't moved past ni hao and zai jian yet! My lunch was therefore a MASSIVE bowl of noodles with Chinese cabbage, pork, mushrooms and some purple vegetable that I didn't work out. It was very tasty, and only cost 20RMB (about £2!)

Next to the famous fake markets. We spent a while looking at the converse shoes (all starts), toms shoes (tims) and uggs (ugs) :) Kevin walked away with a tintin painting that had started proceedings at 530RMB and finished on 180. As for me - I now own a very authentic Cath Kidston bag, which I am planning on using for a planned trip to Suzhou in a couple of weekends time.




And finally, last night was much more chilled out compared to Friday! A DVD and a bag of cheesy lobster crisps (yes, really!) with a couple of the other teachers.. DVDs here are amazing! As a general rule each disk is 5RMB. I got a bit excited last night and walked away with:




Series 1-7 of greys anatomy and how I met your mother, series 1-3 of modern family, plus a copy of the artist and the hunger games. Which came to a grand total of £13.50!

Now if you don't mind, I have 176 episodes of how I met your mother to work my way through!

First week back at school!

I am straight back into school now! Monday and Tuesday were whole school inset days and Wednesday we had just new children in (of which I had 6!). Then the rest of my class returned on Thursday and Friday. I have 22 children and a whole load of different nationalities - I am sensing a display here! Australian, American, British, Hungarian, Indian, Chinese (unsurprisingly I guess!), Indonesian... I could continue! But also a lot of the children have moved from several different countries too, so it is very interesting chatting to them about all the exciting places they have lived in.

The school day is a lot longer than in the UK-the children arrive between 8 and 8,15, and we finish at 3.30. It may not sound a lot but I am used to getting started at about 9, so you can tell the difference! But we always used to say that it was hard to fit everything in each week so hopefully that won't be too much of a problem now! Next week we will start on a normal timetable so I will get a bit more of an idea what we are doing then.

I am still going out when I can to meet the old junior school staff, everyone seems really friendly. I am also going to write a list of everything I want to do in Shanghai as it seems likely that the weekends could just pass with constantly going out! Last night I combined the two...

KTV! For those of you who haven't heard of KTV, it's karaoke... Which is MASSIVE here. The building was the size of a supermarket, with a compete maze of individual rooms and flashing disco nights. I swear they get you deliberately lost so you the idea of trying to find your way out is so off putting that you just stay and sing some more.

We payed 100rmb each (just under £10) to get the room for 6 hours. We scoffed at the idea of being in there for 6 hours... Little did we know!



That 100 each also included 3 BIG bottles of Smirnoff vodka, 20 bottles of coke, 20 bottles of beer and a random assortment of snacks





6 hours didn't look quite so unlikely now!

And yes, here we are 5 hours later, still singing!




We managed to work our way out of the maze at 4.30am, when it was still surprisingly busy! And just enough time left to stop off at the 24 hour KFC for some chicken porridge (or fries, though the porridge was an option) before wandering home in the morning sunshine!

All in all a very cultural evening, but also an incredibly fun one!!

I won't take up any more space here chatting, but still having lots of fun. I am going for my medical tomorrow so I imagine that will involve some comical

I have arrived!

I am here! In China! Still pinching myself when I wake up in the morning!

It has been a very busy few days, have I really only been here 4 days?! I arrived at lunchtime and was greeted by my new head teacher and some other teachers who were delayed due to the typhoon (I just missed it, thank god! Though we did fly through a storm and seeing lightning that close up is pretty scary!)

I hadn't slept at all during the flight, so I scraped a few hours of sleep in the hotel and then we were out for dinner and drinks with some new and current staff. Everyone is very friendly and I am glad that we were thrown into doing things straight away. I have gone out the past three nights with new staff too, great start!

On Thursday I moved into my flat.




I am on the 7th floor of this block

WOW!!! It is huge!! I have a big open plan lounge/dining room, a big kitchen, THREE bedrooms and 2 bathrooms!! It is all very modern and I love it! I am in a massive compound which I am still wandering around to get my bearings, I think there about 40 blocks in total. But it is a lot greener than I was expecting. And also calmer, but we are in the suburbs!

I will put some pictures of it up in a bit, but I don't have wireless in my flat yet so I am sat in Starbucks at the moment, and forget to take any photos.

Other than going out for dinner and drinks I have managed to sort out a few things. I have come to realise that everything here takes at least 10 times effort, but it is 10 times more gratifying when they are done! For example, I have a water dispenser in my flat. There was no water in it. Hmm.

UK solution: ring the number and job done.
China solution: Go to the reception. Spend 15 minutes using mime and a translator app to explain the issue. Realise you are at the wrong reception. Walk to the next reception. Repeat the above, including being In the wrong place. Work out where you actually need to be! Repeat the above, buy tokens for water. Get home and look at the tokens as you have no idea what they mean!
Discuss this with people at school. Get given a number to ring. Ring, with crossed fingers there is an English option. There is! Result! Order water. And this morning.... IT ARRIVED!! I actually fist pumped the air when the door bell went!

Job 1 done, only 27 left :)

And.... I'm off!

I actually wrote this on the plane heading towards Hong Kong, so it is a bit delayed in getting posted!

The last few days in the UK have been great, Libby and Andrews wedding was absolutely fantastic. She looked stunning and they both looked so happy the entire day :D happy honeymooning! I will put some pictures on here when I can. It was also good to spend time with Em and Em and with my family :)

I am now starting my journey, both physically and metaphorically, to my new teaching career in Shanghai. Hopefully the posts from now on will be slightly more interesting than "I said goodbye to this person, and then I packed, and then I did some more goodbyes" which is what they seem to be so far! (I swear I started saying goodbye at the start of June! Though generally that involved a lot of wine and laughs, so not complaining!!)

I am feeling pretty nervous about everything ahead of me; it is all quite overwhelming! And I know I will miss a lot.... Hmmm a list seems quite a good idea here!

- my family
- all of my lovely friends
- living in London. I am so glad I have lived there, it really has been a great 2 years.
- living with Libs!
- cadbury boost bars (the 4 in my suitcase are not going to last long at all!)
- crisps and tzatziki mmmmmm

But when that becomes a bit too much I am going to try and think about all of the reasons that made me want to teach internationally in the first place. Namely;

- travelling around China
- travelling around Asia!
- meeting people from all over the world
- exploring a completely different culture
- trying lots of tasty new food, mmm
- attempting to learn a new language
- developing as a person

That last one sounds really cliche but I am doing this by myself, and I don't want to sit around my flat by myself every night. Therefore I will have to become more confident and proactive. In a way that makes me glad I am going solo, If I were to do this with a friend/family then I probably wouldn't force myself to attend different events, and who knows what missed opportunities that would result in!

Anyway, time to watch the Hunger Games! See you in Asia! X

A puppy, a party and lots of packing!

First of all, let me introduce you to Pippa, a new member of the family and a mix between a Cavalier King Charles spaniel and a poodle... The result? A cavapoo!



We didn't really need to weigh her, but how cute does she look in the kitchen scales!!

On Saturday night we had our family and friends over for another little party (in the garden... In July?! Unheard of!) It was a really nice evening, completed with an English-Chinese dinner of prawn toasts and satay chicken... Yum yum! I was really overwhelmed by all the lovely presents I received, which I really wasn't expecting!



We also had fortune cookies. This wasn't actually my fortune, it was Charlotte's but I decided I liked it better than mine which was going on about the disappointments of today blah blah blah! So I have made my own fortune by stealing someone else's ;)

I have FINALLY finished packing. Though actually that involved packing up the London flat, unpacking all of that at home and then repacking what I want to ship. The result.... LOOOOOOOOONG!!!! 9 boxes (how have I filled 9 boxes?!) and 2 suitcases later I am finally done.
